Cowboys win key road game at UCCS, keep destiny in own hands

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- The New Mexico Highlands men's basketball team picked up a key road win at UCCS 100-96 Tuesday night to keep its postseason hopes in its own hands.

The Cowboys (15-12) at 10-11 are now alone in the No. 8 and final RMAC Tournament spot with one game left for them (two for the other teams). NMHU sits a half game ahead of Westminster and owns the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Griffins and are 1.5 games ahead of Adams State and CSU Pueblo. NMHU is also a game back of MSU Denver for the No. 7 spot.

In short, the Cowboys with a win 4 p.m. Saturday at home against South Dakota Mines and they are in the RMAC Tournament.

As for Tuesday's key win, the Cowboys led 44-35 at the half before UCCS (19-8, 14-7) rallied to take the lead and held an 88-86 lead with 3:14 remaining.

NMHU's Marcus Brown then drained a 3-pointer with 2:21 left and the Cowboys wouldn't trail again after Sammy Barnes-Thompkins drained another 3-pointer on NMHU's next possession to make it 92-88.

The Cowboys closed it out by going 6-for-6 from the line in the final minute.

Andre Adams finished with a double-double with 27 points, 11 rebounds, three steals, three assists and a block. Barnes-Thompkins had 27 points, seven assists and went 5-for-10 from 3-point range, Desmond Carpenter had 23 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals and Brown had 14 points, four rebounds and four assists.
