Cowgirls drop close contest at Western Colorado

GUNNISON, Colo. --- The New Mexico Highlands women's basketball team held an early fourth-quarter lead, but fell on the road at Western Colorado 60-52 on Saturday night at Paul Wright Gym.

The Cowgirls (5-16, 2-13) rallied from a 14-5 first-quarter deficit to take a 28-25 lead into the half after outscoring the Mountaineers (10-10, 8-7) 23-11 in the second quarter - thanks to going 8-for-14 from the field, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range.

NMHU trailed 44-43 going into the fourth quarter before Zenevieve Coronado-Casebolt drained a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter to take a 46-44 lead.

But WCU answered with a 3-pointer on its next possession to start a 12-0 run to take a 56-46 lead with under five minutes left and the Cowgirls wouldn't get within eight points the rest of the way.

Jordyn Lewis led NMHU with 11 points while Coronado-Casebolt had nine points - going 3-for-3 from 3-point range.

The Cowgirls return to action Tuesday when they host Colorado Mesa at Wilson Complex.
