PUEBLO, Colo. --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team couldn't complete the four-game sweep of CSU Pueblo as it fell short to the ThunderWolves 9-7 on Sunday at Rawlings Field.
The Cowboys (12-24, 8-12) fell behind 2-0 in the first and trailed CSU Pueblo (21-17, 12-8) for much of the rest of the game. NMHU tied it 2-2 in the top of the third on a
Brandon Baier two-run homer before the ThunderWolves scored three in the bottom half of the inning and eventually took an 8-3 lead heading into the sixth.
In the sixth, NMHU scored a run on a wild pitch, an error and an
Estevan De La O ground-rule double to cut the lead to 8-6 - but that's as close as the Cowboys would get.
Aidan McNichol went 3-for-5 for NMHU with a home run while Baier finished 2-for-4 with a homer, double, two RBI and two runs and
Allan Salas went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run.
Dominick Castillo picked up the loss for NMHU, going 2.2 innings and giving up five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
The Cowboys return to action Thursday as they host Colorado School of Mines to start a four-game series against the Orediggers.
