LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands softball team capped its season with a come-from-behind 5-4 win over first-place Colorado Christian in the second game of a doubleheader after dropping the first game 17-2 Saturday at NMHU Softball Field.
In game two, the Cowgirls (8-44 overall, 6-34 RMAC) trailed the Cougars (46-8, 34-4) 4-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth and hadn't collected a hit entering the inning.
Mickey Sibley ended the CCU no-hit bid with a single to left and
Dioni Lincoln followed by getting hit with a pitch to put two on with no outs. After a flyout,
Nia Martinez hit a pinch-hit single to right to load the bases with one out.
Following a strikeout,
Heaven Medina hit an infield RBI single to make it 4-1 CCU as the bases were still loaded with two outs.
That's when on a full count NMHU pitcher
Arianna Ramirez blasted a grand slam to left field to give the Cowgirls a 5-4 lead over Colorado Christian.
Ramirez then returned to the circle and after a strikeout, walk and a single, got CCU to fly into a double play as right fielder
Samantha Gamboa caught a fly ball then tossed out a Cougar runner trying to tag up and head to third to end the game.
Ramirez went seven innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks.
In the first game, CCU used two runs in the first to lead for good and forced the run rule with an 11-run fifth inning to make the final 17-2.
Carlee Gonzalez went 2-for-2 for NMHU with a double and a run while
Camrynn Ziegler went 2-for-3 and Gamboa and Lincoln each had an RBI. Ramirez got the loss in the circle, going 4.1 innings and giving up 11 runs on 12 hits with no strikeouts and six walks.
