Las Vegas, New Mexico - New Mexico Highlands fell to Colorado State University - Pueblo Saturday afternoon at Sanchez Family Stadium by a score of 56-7. The loss drops the Cowboys to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The ThunderWolves improved to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
The Cowboys struggled to get on track all afternoon as they recorded just 158 yards of total offense against the ThunderWolves.
Individually, Shawntay Mills, Jr was the leading rusher on the day with 89 yards on 14 carries.
Cayden Walton added 21 yards on eight attempts.
Gage Guardiola was 4 of 11 for 24 yards passing and
Mateo Jimenez had a pair of receptions for 14 yards.
Devin Coney, once again, led the defense with nine tackles.
Demond Young recorded an interception and JT Vete had a sack.
The lone score of the afternoon for NMHU came by way of a 46 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by junior linebacker Ginnis Gannon late in the second quarter.
William McDaniel tacked on the extra point to close out the scoring for the day.
Things don't get any easier for the Cowboys as they head to Gunnison next Saturday afternoon to face an undefeated Western Colorado University team on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm. The Mountaineers were ranked #14 in last week's American Football Coaches Association Division II Poll.
