Las Vegas, New Mexico - The New Mexico Highlands men's cross country team jumped two spots to #26 in this week's NCAA Division II rankings that were released yesterday by U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA). The Cowboys are one of seven teams from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in this week's poll. The October 4th poll makes the third consecutive week for NMHU in the Top 30.
Last week the men's and women's squads turned in strong performances at the 2023 HU X/C Jam in Las Vegas.
John Hall captured the men's 7k championship while
Gracey Lovato won the women's 5k.
Both teams will compete in the UCCS XC Open on Friday morning in Colorado Springs. The event is at Monument Valley Park with the men's 8k getting under way at 9:00 am followed by the women's 6k at 9:45 am.
Expected to compete for the men on Friday morning are
Nathias Rael,
Celso Garcia and
Edgar Hernandez. On the women's side
Lucia Harrison,
Abigail Serna,
Emma Hurren and
Josey French will make the trip north to Colorado Springs.
"We will be taking a small group up to the meet," said head coach
Bob DeVries. "We have some athletes that need a little sharpening before conference in two weeks."
