Football Lose At Black Hills State Saturday

Spearfish, South Dakota - Black Hills State handed New Mexico Highlands its third straight loss Saturday afternoon 34-24. The Cowboys record stands at 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while the Yellow Jackets improve to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in conference action.

Once again a slow start spelled trouble for the Cowboys this week as they fell behind 21-0 when Black Hills State scored their third touchdown of the afternoon early in the second quarter.

Malik Norman would get the Cowboys on the board when he scored on a five yard touchdown run as time was running down late in the second quarter to make the score 21-7.

Shawntay Mills Jr. would get the scoring started in the second half when he capped a quick scoring drive for the Cowboys on a 17 yard run just two minutes into the second half making the score 21-14.

The Yellow Jackets added two more touchdowns in the third quarter to push the lead to 34-14.

Will McDaniel opened the scoring in the final quarter with a 37 yard field goal making the score 34-17. Malik Norman added his second touchdown of the afternoon late in the fourth to pull the Cowboys within two scores at 34-24.

The Cowboys ran 60 plays enroute to rolling up 356 yards of total offense Saturday afternoon.

Malik Norman had 33 yards on 10 carries and two rushing scores while Shawntay Mills Jr. added 62 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown.

Joey Cave was 14 0f 19 for 170 yards through the air. He added 12 yards rushing the ball on four carries.

Teneil Nichols was the leading receiver Saturday afternoon with seven catches for 100 yards.

On the defensive side, Devin Coney, Gannon Ginnis, and Mark Simon II each recorded six tackles for NMHU. Ginnis recovered a fumble as well.

Will McDaniel had another good day kicking the ball for NMHU. He was three for three on PATs, and made his only field goal attempt of the day. Additionally, he recorded a pair of touchbacks and dropped a punt inside the Yellow Jackets 20 yard line.

The Cowboys have a week to regroup before welcoming Colorado State-Pueblo to Sanchez Family Stadium next Saturday afternoon for a 12:00 pm match-up.
