Pueblo, Colorado - The New Mexico Highlands women's basketball team closed out 2023 with an 82-47 loss at CSU-Pueblo on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Cowgirls fall to 3-9 overall while the ThunderWolves improve to 7-6. Sunday's game was a non-conference make-up contest.
Early on, the two teams battled back and forth with the Cowgirls leading 5-4 on a three-pointer by
Aja Scott at the 7:16 mark of the opening quarter. CSU-Pueblo pulled away late and owned a 15-8 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
NMHU outscored the hosts 15-13 in the second quarter and trailed 28-23 at the half.
CSU-Pueblo put together strong third and fourth quarters to secure the final margin of victory over the Cowgirls.
NMHU shot 17-60 from the floor and 5-8 from the free throw line on Sunday. CSU-Pueblo held a 54-35 edge on the boards.
Aja Scott led the Cowgirls 15 points as she converted on five of eight three point attempts.
Michaela Martinez added eight points in the contest.
Delani Harris grabbed eight rebounds to lead NMHU.
The Cowgirls return to action this coming Friday as they travel to Salt Lake City to face Westminster at 5:00 pm.
