The New Mexico Highlands Cowboys faced off against the Colorado Mesa Mavericks in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Despite their best efforts, the Cowboys lost both games to the Mavericks. It was a bittersweet day as the Cowboys honored their seniors
Cobe Lehman,
Hunter Waugh, and Fabian Ferrera.
The first game of the doubleheader was a nail-biter. The Mavericks came out swinging in the first inning, scoring three runs off of two home runs. The Cowboys were quick to respond in the third inning, with Admire doubling and bringing in two runs followed by a homerun from Ferreira to tie the game up at 4-4. The Mavericks took the lead again in the fifth inning with a double from Villafuerte, but the Cowboys kept the game close with a run in the seventh inning. Despite their efforts, the Cowboys were unable to close the gap and the Mavericks won 6-5.
The second game was a tough one for the Cowboys as the Mavericks jumped out to an early lead, scoring 12 runs in the first two innings. The Cowboys managed to score a few runs in the second and third innings, but the Mavericks kept the pressure on and continued to score, ending the game with a score of 24-7.
Although the Cowboys did not come out with a win, they played a fundamental game that would have won them the first matchup. The first game was especially close, with the Cowboys showing their resilience and ability to come back from a deficit. The seniors, Lehman, Waugh, and Ferrera, were honored for their contributions to the team and will be missed as they move on from their college baseball careers.
The Cowboys will look to regroup and come back stronger tomorrow as they look to finish out the year with a win at home.
