Big Day For NMHU Men’s Cross Country In Season Opening Race

The NMHU Men's Cross Country Team got the 2023 season off on the right foot at the 16th Annual UCCS Rust Buster by finishing second to the host Mountain Lions.

The Cowboys posted 54 points in finishing second to edge out nationally ranked CSU Pueblo (55 points).

Individually, Senior Andrew Amor won the race, fishing the 8k course in 24:56.5.

"I didn't expect anyone in the field to really challenge him," said Head Coach Bob DeVries. "He controlled the tempo and worked on bringing our #2 (Nathais Rael) and #3 (Mart Nijhuis) men with him for the first couple of miles. After that he broke away for a fairly relaxed win."

Said Amor of his race today, "I was trying to help the boys and win doing as little as necessary."

"The men raced with composure and purpose. There's more to it than go out and race as hard as you can, this group is learning to race. That's exciting," concluded DeVries.
