Las Vegas, New Mexico - The Cowgirls returned home last weekend for the first time in nearly a month for a pair of conference matches. On Friday they fell to Fort Lewis 3-0 and on Sunday got a late goal to secure a 1-1 tie with Western Colorado. NMHU is now 2-6-2 overall and 0-3-1 in RMAC play.
EVANS TIME:
Amanda Evans was named the NMHU head coach on March 14th of this year and she earned her first win at the helm of the Cowgirls on September 5th 1-0 over Sul Ross State. LAST WEEK: The Cowgirls, playing their first match in Las Vegas since September 5th, welcomed a pair of RMAC foes for matches last weekend. On Friday afternoon the Cowgirls battled Fort Lewis to a scoreless first half. The Skyhawks used a trio of second half goals to pull away in the second half. Sunday afternoon's match had a similar feel to Friday's as NMHU and Western Colorado played a scoreless first half. After the visiting Mountaineers cracked the scoring column midway through the second half to take a 1-0 lead, junior
Isavel Glenn scored her first goal of the season, on an assist from
Renee Johnson, with less than four minutes remaining in the match to help secure the 1-1 draw.
"It was nice to play in front of our home fans," said Coach
Amanda Evans. On the goal by
Isavel Glenn, Evans observed, "Her goal is a great example of what you do with the minutes you get."
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION: On Friday night the Cowgirls are in Spearfish for a 7:00 pm match with Black Hills State. The Yellow Jackets are 0-6-4 overall and 0-3-1 in conference play after playing Colorado School of Mines to a 1-1 draw and losing to Colorado Mesa 2-0 last weekend. John Hutchison is in his second season as head coach at Black Hills State. Friday's meeting is the eight all time between the two schools with the Cowgirls holding a 4-2-1 series edge.
On Sunday afternoon the Cowgirls will be in the Mile High City for an 11:00 am meeting with Regis. The Rangers are 2-6-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the RMAC this season. Regis hosts Adams State on Friday evening before playing NMHU. Head Coach Jeff Frykholm is in his third season at Regis where he has a career record of 28-18-5.
"Black Hills State played a really good match last week against Colorado Mines," said Coach Evans. "They are a mentally tough team and the match will come down to our focus and ability to deal with any adversity we face." On the match-up at Regis on Sunday morning, Evans said, "Regis is a good program with a competitive reputation. We need to execute our game plan against them to compete."
