Las Vegas, New Mexico - New Mexico Highlands notched its second win of the season with a 44-27 win over Adams State on First Responders Night presented by the City of Las Vegas. The Cowboys are now 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the RMAC.
The Cowboys got on the board first Saturday when
Logan Matthews converted on a 32 yard field goal midway through the first quarter.
After Adams State took a 7-3 lead five minutes in to the second quarter,
Tevita Valeti punched it in from the one yard line to give the Cowboys a 10-7 lead that they held until halftime.
Adams State took the opening kick-off of the second half the distance to reclaim the lead at 13-10. Valeti then scored on touchdown runs of four yards and twelve yards to put the Cowboys ahead 23-13 at the end of the third quarter.
Velati wasn't done as he scored one minute into the fourth quarter on a 12 yard run and NMHU was up 30-13.
Joey Cave got in on the action with a five yard run of his own with six minutes to go in the game. Then
Waika Crawford then hit
Cameron Swain on a 25 yard scoring strike for the Cowboys final score of the game.
Freshman
Tevita Valeti had a monster game as he rushed for 200 yards on 37 carries and four touchdowns.
Joey Cave had 94 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Teneil Nichols led the Cowboys with three catches for 43 yards.
The Cowboys defense forced three Grizzlies turnovers in the game.
Adrian Bonilla had six tackles to lead NMHU.
Isaiah Jackson intercepted an Adams State pass in the second half.
