Chebon Continues Preparations For National Championships

Las Vegas, New Mexico - Weldon Chebon continues his preparations for the NCAA Division II National Championships a week removed from his impressive eighth place finish on a snow covered course at the South Central Region Championships in Denver.

Chebon finished the 10k race last Saturday in a time of 31:32.7. If the finish wasn't enough, Chebon, a native of Timbora, Kenya, was racing on a snow covered course for the very first time. In fact, Chebon had never seen snow until early that week when the first storm hit the Las Vegas area.

All Chebon could say about racing in those conditions was, "It was very tough since it was my first race in snow."

Reflecting back on the season's results, Chebon credits much of his success to Head Coach Bob DeVries. "Looking back on the season, 70% of the results were because of Coach DeVries and 30% from me," said Chebon. "If not for Coach I could not run as well as I did."

If you are out early in the day around the Las Vegas area, you're likely to see Chebon, his teammate James Kurui (who narrowly missed qualifying for a spot in the National Championships), and Coach DeVries during a training session in preparation for the trip to Nationals.

When asked about his preparations for the next race, Chebon said, "For the preparations for Nationals, I will let Coach guide me for the best possible results."

The Division II National Championship race is next Saturday in Sacramento, California.  The forecast in Sacramento on Saturday is for temperatures in the 60s and possible rain....but no snow!
