Las Vegas, New Mexico - The New Mexico Highlands women's basketball team opened the home portion of the season with a 71-56 win over University of the Southwest on Monday evening. With the win, the Cowgirls improve to 2-1 on the young season.
After trailing by as many as six points in the opening quarter, the Cowgirls took the lead 11-10 when
Juliana Aragon converted a lay-up with 0:59 remaining on the clock. NMHU pushed the lead to 27-24 at the half and outscored the visiting Mustangs 44-32 in the second half.
The Cowgirls dominated the boards as they out-rebounded the Mustangs 49-32 and scored 27 second chance points as a result.
NMHU shot 37% from the floor and converted five three-pointers in the game.
Juliana Aragon led the Cowgirls in scoring off the bench with a game high 20 points. She also had a game high five assists. Also in double figures for the Cowgirls was
Kapiolani Anitielu with 10 points.
Caitlin Turnbow grabbed a team high nine rebounds while
Aspen Salazar had three steals.
Up next, the Cowgirls host Northern New Mexico on Wednesday at 5:30 pm as NMHU celebrates Indigenous People and native American Heritage month.
