Las Vegas, New Mexico - New Mexico Highlands opens conference play this week hosting Regis on Thursday at 7:00 pm and nationally ranked Colorado School of Mines on Saturday at 3:00 pm. The Cowboys head into conference play at 6-1 with the lone setback of the season coming at the hands of Eastern New Mexico the opening weekend of play.
COACH DOMINGUEZ:
Mike Dominguez is in his sixth season leading the Cowboys. The Colorado Mesa product has a career record of 60-59 at NMHU. His first career win came on November 5, 2019, when he led the Cowboys to a 112-108 win over Eastern New Mexico.
BY THE NUMBERS: Through the first seven games this season, the Cowboys are averaging 84.7 points per game while giving up 78.1 per game. NMHU is averaging 23.1 points per game off of turnovers and leads the RMAC with a turnover margin of +6.86.
Senior
Kenard Richardson is third in the RMAC in scoring at 17.1 points per game and tied for ninth with 1.6 steals per game. Richardson is eighth in the conference shooting 53% from the floor.
Senior
Kyrie Thomas is fifth in the conference shooting 46% from beyond the arc, fourth with 2.7 three point shots made per game and is tied for ninth in the RMAC at 1.6 steals per game.
Freshman
KJ LaMonte is ninth in the conference with a free throw percentage of 82% and second with 38 free throws attempted.
Five different Cowboys are averaging double figures seven games into the season: Richardson (17.1), LaMonte (11.1), Thomas (10.9),
Blessin Kimble (10.7), and
TJ Sanchez (10.3).
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION: Regis brings a record of 2-4 into Thursday's match-up with the Cowboys after splitting a pair of games over Thanksgiving weekend. Brady Bergeson is in his 10th season at the helm of the Rangers where he has amassed a record of 148-111. Chase Mayo Harmon leads Regis in scoring at 13.0 per game while Ty Cox is the leading rebounder at 4.5 per outing. The Rangers took both games from the Cowboys last season winning 94-85 in Las Vegas and 82-76 in Denver.
The Orediggers, ranked 13th in this week's NABC Division II Poll, are 4-1 on the season. Their last game was a 107-67 win over UCCS on November 26th. Long time coach Pryor Orser is in his 24th season at Colorado School of Mines where he has a 449-228 record. Majok Deng leads the Orediggers in scoring at 15.0 points per game. Deng and Alex Romack are the leading rebounders at 5.0 per contest. Saturday's game is the 82nd all time meeting between the two schools. The Orediggers hold a 48-33 lead in the series history that dates back to the 1965-66 season.
