Amor In Oman For FISU World University Games

Las Vegas, New Mexico - Andrew Amor will represent his home country of Australia this weekend in Muscat, Oman, at the FISU World University Games Cross Country Championships. Amor will compete in the Men's 10k which is scheduled to get under way at 1:00 am (MT) Sunday.

"Andy has had a ton of reasons to be distracted in the lead-up to the World University Games - finals, traveling to Australia for a second celebration of his marriage (to fellow HU distance runner, Faith Lovato) a honeymoon, traveling back to the states and starting a new semester -  but you will not find a more self-disciplined and focused athlete. He's stayed committed to training and has prepared well," said New Mexico Highlands head coach Bob DeVries.

"Last week he set a personal best by 10 seconds for the 3000 meters, a bit of a 'blow-out' race to check fitness and speed. Very different than the 10k he will race on Sunday, but it shows he's very fit and race ready," continued Coach DeVries.

Weather conditions could be a factor in Sunday's event for Amor.

"Temperatures in Oman at race time are supposed to be 85-degrees, certainly not ideal coming from training here in northern New Mexico, but we talked about adapting and adjusting and outlasting. As Andy put it, "I'll just have to out-tough everyone"-- if anyone can do just that, it's Andy," added DeVries.

Amor, a three time NCAA Division II All-American, finished fifth at the Division II Championships in Joplin, Missouri in November. He was the 2023 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Runner of the Year as he captured the men's 8k in 23:58.4 in Denver this past October.
