Las Vegas, New Mexico - The Cowgirls battled Sul Ross State and Mother Nature to earn a hard fought 1-0 win in front of an enthusiastic crowd on Thursday afternoon. Today's win snapped a 21 match winless streak for the NMHU program dating back to October 22, 2022.
Junior
Kate Rayner put the Cowgirls on the scoreboard at the 83:01 mark of the match when she placed the ball over the head of Sul Ross State keeper and into the back left corner of the net to break the scoreless tie. Freshman
Mia Roybal got the assist on the goal.
Sophomore
Peyton Greener made five saves to earn the shutout for the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls outshot the Lobos 4-1 in the opening half and 90-5 for the match.
"I think that we can all agree that what this game gives the program, its fans and our community here in Las Vegas is excitement," said coach
Amanda Evans after the match on Thursday. "We are excited about the returners we have and their constant work ethic to make this happen, we are excited about our new players and the passion and life they bring to the team, we are excited that our alumni support has motivated us to push for improvement to honor their legacy, and we are excited for all of our new administration that their tremendous support helps us carry out our vision of success, and we are excited for our community, that they get to be a part and contribute to our future success."
Evans continued, "In rebuilding a program there are always ups and downs, and we are grateful to be celebrating an "up" tonight with so many."
Up next, the Cowgirls travel to Hobbs to face University of the Southwest on Saturday afternoon. Match time with the Mustangs is set for 1:00 pm.
