Box Score Hobbs, New Mexico - Two days removed from their season opening win over Sul Ross State, the Cowgirls traveled to the southeastern part of the state to face University of the Southwest on Saturday. After playing in cool, rainy conditions on Thursday, Saturday's game was on a sunny and warm afternoon on the Bob Moran Soccer Field.
Kate Rayner scored for the Cowgirls on a pass from
Jennifer Mueller to put NMHU up 1-0 at the 16:30 mark of the match.
The Mustangs answered back eight minutes later to knot the match at 1-1.
Despite outshooting the host Mustangs 18-6, the Cowgirls could not get back on the scoreboard and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Rayner's goal this afternoon was her second of the season.
Peyton Greener got the start in goal again for NMHU and made five saves.
After the match, Coach
Amanda Evans said, "It was great to see our players continued improvement. We had 18 shots to their six which shows that even though we lost to them last year, we are stepping into this season with great confidence and momentum."
With today's draw in Hobbs, the Cowgirls equal their best start since 2013 when they started 1-0-1 after they opened the season with a tie against Angelo State and a win over Central Washington.
Up next, the Cowgirls travel to Kearney, Nebraska, to play Moorhead State and Concordia St. Paul this coming weekend. "We are looking forward to testing our strength against some strong Minnesota teams this weekend," said Evans.
