Juliana Aragon reached a career scoring milestone as the Cowgirls upended MSU-Denver 75-62 on Thursday night. The win improved the Cowgirls to 9-8 overall and 6-5 in conference play.
Aragon reached the 1,000 point mark for her career when she converted a free-throw at the 6:34 mark of the fourth quarter. The junior from Bernalillo led the Cowgirls in scoring her freshman and sophomore seasons and she currently leads this year's team at 16.5 points per game.
"I'm so proud of Jules for accomplishing the goal that she set for herself when she came to Highlands," said Head Coach
Lindsey Fearing. "I'm blessed to coach a kid like her that puts in the work every day. There are not a lot of basketball players like her anymore. One goal down, many more to go for her."
Aragon was the game's leading scorer on Thursday night with 19 points. She handed out a game high six assists.
Aniya Johnson and
Kapiolani Anitielu were also in double figures with 18 points each. Anitielu also had a game high nine rebounds.
NMHU dominated the boards out rebounding the host Roadrunners 49-26.
As a team the Cowgirls shot 43.3% from the floor and 75% from the free throw line.
NMHU, playing away from home for the third straight game, led for all but the first 43 seconds of the game. They held a 39-28 advantage at the halftime break and led by as many as 17 points in the second half.
Thursday's win was the first over MSU-Denver for the Cowgirls since January 3, 2014.
The road trip continues for NMHU at 1:00 pm on Saturday afternoon at Regis. The Rangers fell a game behind the Cowgirls in the RMAC standings after they were defeated by Adams State 77-64 on Thursday evening at the Regis Fieldhouse.
