Wrestling Goes 2-1 On Sunday

Las Vegas, New Mexico - The Cowboys earned the first career win for Head Coach Chris Freije on Sunday afternoon as they posted a 2-1 record in the NMHU duals.

In the opening dual of the day, the Cowboys defeated Otero 33-15. NMHU followed that up with a 25-16 win over Vanguard. The lone setback of the day came when Simon Fraser narrowly topped the Cowboys 29-28.

Sophomore Ivan Smith, wrestling at 165, was undefeated on Sunday as he improved to 9-1 this season.

As part of the day's activities the Cowboys and the New Mexico Highlands Foundation Alumni Department hosted Alumni Recognition Day.

"I'm happy to be able to honor, and recognize our alumni today," said Head Coach Chris Freije. "It's really a privilege for us to be able to provide this opportunity for them to watch some Cowboy Wrestling back "home" in Las Vegas. Especially knowing a lot of them aren't local, and may not be able to make it to every home event. We truly are grateful for all they did for the program while they were here - I know we feel the passion they have for New Mexico Highlands wrestling as a staff, and our guys feel it as student-athletes."

The Cowboys return to action this coming Saturday traveling to Gunnison to compete in the Tracy Borah Duals.
