Grand Junction, Colorado - Colorado Mesa defeated the Cowgirls by an 86-59 count on Thursday evening in Grand Junction. The loss moves NMHU to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The Cowgirls grabbed an early lead at Brownson Arena but strong play by the host Mavericks saw them outscore NMHU by a combined 41-15 in the second and third quarters in the first game after the holiday break for both teams.
A trio of Cowgirls scored in double-figures led by freshman
Kapiolani Anitielu's 15 points.
Juliana Aragon scored 11 points and had a team high three assists and three steals.
Eva Ongoongotau scored 10 points and grabbed a team high five rebounds.
NMHU shot 36.8% from the floor and 58.3% from the free throw line.
Colorado Mesa won the battle of the boards 50-23.
The Cowgirls travel to Gunnison for a Saturday afternoon match-up with Western Colorado. Tip-off is set for 1:00 pm.
