Las Vegas, New Mexico - The Cowgirls' soccer team is back in Las Vegas this weekend as the Colorado Mesa Mavericks (Friday, 1 PM) and Westminster Griffins (Sunday, 1 PM) come to town.
Cowgirls:
The Cowgirls enter this weekend hunting for their first win as a ranked Mavericks team rolls into town, followed by the mythical creature Griffins coming in on Sunday.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Cowgirls dropped a pair of games last weekend, first to Fort Lewis, then to Western Colorado.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
On Friday, the Cowgirls will take on the 20th-ranked Mavericks, who currently sit at 8-2 overall,4-0 in the RMAC, and at the top of the RMAC standings. The Mavericks sit in second in both points and assists in the RMAC. Head Coach Jody Lingafeld is in her second season running the Mavericks soccer program. She previously was a part of the UC Davis Aggies coaching staff before going to Grand Junction to become the head coach.
Westminster will start its trip in Alamosa before coming into historic Las Vegas on Sunday. Entering the weekend, they are 3-1-5 and 0-1-2 on the season. Also hunting for their first conference win of the season. Last season, the Griffins hosted the Cowgirls and managed to come out with a victory in Salt Lake City. Tony LeBlanc is in his 20th season at the helm of the Griffins program in Salt Lake City and has led them to multiple NAIA playoffs and the program's first RMAC championship birth in 2020-21.
Coach Evans said this about facing a ranked opponent in the RMAC: "That's the thing about the RMAC, we have a bunch of teams in our conference that are ranked, so it's nothing new. We always hope that our players come in with nothing to lose and play their hearts out. So in the big picture, playing ranked teams always adds an extra level to the players."
"When it comes to Westminster, they've always been a pretty solid team, so regardless of what happens on Friday. We need to switch gears and focus on Westminster. Since this conference has us playing two games in three days consistently, our players are mentally accustomed to it, so I have full confidence in the team showing up to both games at their best. It's great to have hope, but it's our actions that will dictate our outcome." Evans said about playing a Westminster team this weekend. FREE !!: Ticket prices for this game are $0.00, a free admission game, so come out and cheer on the Cowgirls at the Cinder Road Field this weekend.
