Las Vegas, New Mexico - The New Mexico Highlands Cross Country teams open the 2025 season on Saturday morning at the Lori Fitzgerald Open in Las Cruces. The women's 5k is slated to begin at 7:30 AM, while the men's 5k is set to start approximately 30 minutes later on the New Mexico State Golf Course.
Saturday's visit to Las Cruces marks the first appearance for the NMHU cross country team since 2021, when All-American Andrew Amor captured the individual title at the Lori Fitzgerald Open with a winning time of 14:41.77. His performance helped propel the Cowboys to a strong third-place team finish, trailing only Division I programs New Mexico and UTEP.
The Cowboys are led by returnees
Weldon Chebon and
James Kurui this season. They are joined by a talented group of underclassmen and freshmen. NMHU was selected 10th in the RMAC Men's Cross Country Preseason Coaches' poll that was released earlier this month.
On the women's side, the Cowgirls were tabbed for a 13th place finish in the preseason RMAC Coach's Poll. Sophomore
Summer Abeyta, winner of the 2024 HU XC Jam, is part of a talented roster featuring five new runners.
Head Coach
Bob DeVries begins his 35th season leading the Track and Cross Country programs at New Mexico Highlands University. Over the course of his career in Las Vegas, DeVries has coached 15 All-Americans including Weldon Chabon last season.
Results for Saturday's races will be posted
