Las Vegas, New Mexico - The New Mexico Highlands cross country teams open the 2026 season Saturday morning at the Art Morgan Classic in Las Cruces, hosted by New Mexico State University.
The women begin at 7:30 am and the men are set for an 8:00 am start.
The Cowboys enter the season with some early regional recognition after being ranked 10th in the USTFCCCA South Central Region preseason rankings. New Mexico Highlands was also selected 12th in the RMAC Men's Cross Country Preseason Coaches' Poll.
The Cowboys return several key contributors from last season, led by All-American Weldon Chebon and All-RMAC performer James Kurui. Sophomore Xavier Martinez also returns after placing among the top 50 at the 2025 RMAC Championships. The returning group is joined by a talented freshman class that will add depth to the roster this fall.
On the women's side, the Cowgirls enter the season with a young roster that will look to make strides throughout the fall. New Mexico Highlands was selected 12th in the RMAC Women's Cross Country Preseason Coaches' Poll.
