LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Las Vegas, New Mexico, area Subway® restaurants and Manger Regina Denardo is pleased to announce that baseball fifth-year senior Matthew Chavez has been named the Subway Eat Fresh Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday (Feb. 16).
 
Chavez had a phenomenal weekend against rival Eastern New Mexico, helping the Cowboys win their first series of the 2015 season. He went 10-for-14 with eight RBI’s seven runs scored, three doubles, a triple and a home run. He also had three walks and a pair of stolen bases. In game four against the Greyhounds on Sunday (Feb. 15), a Highlands 10-8 win, he had what proved to be the game-winning, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth.
 
With the weekend, Chavez moves into the lead in the conference in batting average (.556) among players with at least eight at-bats for the season. He has had multiple hits in 6-of-7 games and is currently on a five-game hitting streak (the Cowboys are 4-1 during that stretch). He also has an RBI in every game where he had a hit and has at least hit, RBI or run scored in each of the first seven Cowboy games.
 
New for the 2014-2015 school year, a Subway® Student-Athlete of the Week will be chosen every week for the athletic year. Every student-athlete chosen for the weekly award will be eligible to win the Subway Eat Fresh® Student-Athlete of the Year award following the 2014-2015 academic year. While the weekly award will be based on athletic prowess, the yearly award will be bestowed upon an athlete based on success not only on the playing field, but also in the classroom and community involvement.
