Hard work has been paying off for the Cowgirl Soccer team. They continued their road series in Golden, CO on 10/17 as they took on the Orediggers of Colorado School of Mines. The Cowgirls proved to be the better team as they won with a score of 2-0.
The Cowgirls started off the shooting as they took the first shot in the sixth minute. It wasn't until the 13th minutes when the Cowgirls would see their work show up on the scoreboard.
Ariana Strickland fed a through ball to
Julissa Rodriguez to score for the Cowgirls to put them up 1-0.
A few minutes later with 17:48 on the clock,
Brooke Schmelter crossed from the right side and Rodriguez jumped for the header to score the second and last goal of the day.
For the remainder of the game, neither team would score but they definitely tried. The Orediggers outshot the Cowgirls, 12-6. The Orediggers also had more corner kicks than the Cowgirls, 7-1. On the same note, the Orediggers had more fouls than the Cowgirls, 7-3.
Amanda Rose Johnson was in the net for the Cowgirls for the entire game and had six saves on the day. She has proven to be a force for the Cowgirls in the back field, as she played two entire games and 70 minutes of the other this week and allowed only one goal.
Rodriguez is now tied for second in the RMAC for goals with 10 on the year. She has also broken the record for scoring at NMHU.
The Cowgirls are 9-4-2 overall and 7-2-2 in RMAC play. The team is on a five game winning streak, which is a new school record for soccer. The Cowgirls are still ranked third in the RMAC, which is the highest ever for NMHU in women's soccer.
The Cowgirls will continue on as they host three home games before the RMAC tournament starts. First up for the Cowgirls are the Mesa State Mavericks on 10/22 before they seek revenge on the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis College on 10/24. The team will be hosting their Parent weekend during this time. Be sure to come out and support your Cowgirls in their quest for a RMAC Championship!
