The NMHU Cowboys hung tough with the nationally ranked #12 Lopers of the University of Nebraska-Kearney on 10/23, but would eventually fall by a final score of 38-13. The Cowboys would play to halftime score of 21-13, but that would be as close as they would get to the Lopers. UNK would capitalize on some key special teams plays to make the difference in the game and come away with the win. The Cowboys will wrap their three game road stint on 10/30 when they travel to Pueblo, Colo. to take on the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo (6-2; 4-2 RMAC).
The Cowboys offense would win the time of possession battle with the Lopers as the Cowboys would hold the ball for 37:54 of the ball game. The Cowboys would grind it out on the ground as they finished the day with 113 yards rushing on 41 carries. The Cowboys would add in 217 yards passing to end the day with 330 yards of total offense.
Kevon Williams would have the high numbers of the game for the Cowboys as he finished the day with 13 catches for 155 yards, three carries for 29 yards and four kick-off returns for 128 yards to end the day with 312 total yards on the day. Quarterback,
Jordan Mendoza would have his best day of the season as he completed 23 of 32 passes for 217 yards and one touchdown. Mendoza would throw one interception on the day.
Defensively, the Cowboys would hold the Lopers to their third lowest total offensive yards of the season with 356 total yards (273 yards rushing and 83 yards passing). The Cowboy defense would force the Lopers to turn the ball over three times throughout the game.
Cordelle Nugent would force one fumble and
TJ Norris and
Taylor Greene would pick off two UNK passes. Nugent would finish the day as the high tackler for the Cowboys with 8 tackles on the day, along with one tackle for a loss of three yards, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
