Cowgirls Split on the Road

The Cowgirl Soccer team took to the road for two RMAC games and came back 1-1. The Cowgirls faced the Fort Lewis Skyhawks, currently the top team in the RMAC and then the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves. The Cowgirls saw some difficulties but split on the weekend. The Cowgirls are now 3-2-1 in RMAC play and 5-4-1 overall.

In the first game against the Skyhawks, the scoring started off 12 minutes into play and didn't seem to stop for the Skyhawks. The Cowgirls fell with a final score of 6-0. Early in the game, the Cowgirls had a red card forcing the team to play a team member short for the next 75 minutes.

The Skyhawks held the Cowgirls to only 7 shots, three of which were on goal. The Skyhawks took 20 shots with 14 of those on goal. Coincidentally, the Skyhawks also had more fouls, 16, than the Cowgirls,11.

Splitting time in the net for the Cowgirls were Amanda Rose Johnson and Shannon Delarosbil. Johnson had six saves with two goals allowed while Delarosbil had two saves with four goals allowed.

The Cowgirls regrouped and then moved on to the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo. Pueblo took the early lead with a 2-0 edge through the half. After the half, with less than 30 minutes left, the Cowgirls answered back with two goals. The first was a Britny Cottrell goal from a Nicole Plaska assist. Following suit, Tierra Saban and Heidi Nakaoka connected to Brooke Schmelter for the goal to tie the game up as the ball was lofted over the keeper's head.

The Thunderwolves then answered back with a goal to put them ahead 3-2. With less than seven minutes left in regulation play, Krista Mashak connected to Saban to tie the game again.

As the game went into overtime, it was Cottrell who connected with Mashak a minute into the overtime period. The goal would be Mashak's fourth of the season and her fourth game winning goal for the Cowgirls this season. Mashak and Saban lead the Cowgirls in scoring with four goals apiece on the year.

The Cowgirls has 23 shots compared to the Thunderwolves' 16. Both teams had six fouls on the day. The Cowgirls edged out the Thunderwolves in corner kicks, 7-2.

Johnson was in the net for the Cowgirls for the entire game and had six saves with three goals allowed.

The Cowgirls will continue their road trek as the take on the Colorado Christian Cougars. Last time the two teams met up, the Cowgirls won with a final score of 2-1.
