The Cowgirl Soccer team has continued to break records with their remarkable season. They hosted the UCCS Mountain Lions in the first round of the RMAC tournament and stole the game with a final score of 4-1. This is the first time ever the Cowgirl Soccer team has made it past the first round of the RMAC Tournament.
At the half, it seemed as if either team could come away with the win as the score was tied at zero. The scoring started within two minutes of the second period.
Julissa Rodriguez fed the ball to Tierra Saban who put the ball in just past the Mountain Lions' Keeper. That was her fifth goal of the season.
Next up it would be
Britny Cottrell who would get the time in the limelight. Rodriguez passed the ball to
Krista Mashak who sent the ball to Cottrell. Players on the field froze for a moment because it seemed as if no one knew if the goal went in or not. The ruling came in and it was a goal, Cottrell's third of the season.
Moments later the Mountain Lions answered back with their own goal to close the margin to 2-1.
Rodriguez took a note from her teammates later in the game. She dribbled the past the Mountain Lions defenders until it was just her and the Keeper. She put the ball in just beyond the Keeper's reach to make the score 3-1. That was her 14th goal of the season and with that goal she is now tied for leading scorer in the RMAC.
With less than three minutes left on the game clock, the Cowgirls had a series of passes and what seemed like plenty of fouls against them. There were opportunities for a goal and it was
Heidi Nakaoka who scored the goal for the Cowgirls off the Rodriguez and
Amanda Piho assist. That would be the deal sealer for the Cowgirls as they went ahead 4-1.
Amanda Rose Johnson earned the win in the net for the Cowgirls. She had seven saves and one goal allowed in the 90 minutes of play.
The Cowgirls outshot the Mountain Lions 19-11 and had the edge on corner kicks 7-6.
“We are so proud of the girls after tonight's game, they did everything we asked them to and more. This was the first collegiate playoff for most of the girls. Their confidence is growing and it is just fun to watch them play and come together as a team. They continue to work hard and it is paying off for them.”
The Cowgirls will now take to the road for the RMAC Tournament Semifinals. They will play the Rangers of Regis University who were the #2 seed going in to the Tournament. The Rangers had a bye in the first round. They will take to the field at 12 pm MDT. The winner of this game will advance to the Finals and take on the winner of the Fort Lewis and Colorado School of Mines game.
