The Cowgirl Soccer team took to the field on 9/10 against the Eastern New Mexico Zias. Going into the matchup, the Cowgirls have only beaten the Zias once in the five matchups. The last time the Cowgirls were able to earn the win over the Zias was in 2003.
The Cowgirls turned things around this year and broke the Zias streak, but it didn't come easy. The Cowgirls took the Zias into overtime, in which
Susannah Hertz scored the game winning goal. The final score was 3-2 in favor of the Cowgirls and would be the second time in the history of this matchup that the Cowgirls would win.
The first goal would be for the Zias in the form of a straight shot over the NMHU keeper's head. The Cowgirls answered back as they took a corner kick.
Ariana Strickland passed the ball to
Julissa Rodriguez who then passed to
Cianna Chun-Ming, who put the ball right past the Zias' keeper.
ENMU answered back with a goal to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Zias. The Cowgirls then saw an opportunity on a penalty kick.
Krista Mashak took the kick for the Cowgirls but it was deflected by the goalie when
Tierra Saban took advantage of the opportunity and put the ball right past the keeper. The score was tied 2-2, which is where it would stay in regulation play.
In overtime, it would be Hertz who would score the game winning goal for the Cowgirls, with just under two minutes left in the first overtime period.
The Cowgirls are now 2-1 on the season as the Cowgirls take their show on the road. They will take on the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State University before they begin RMAC play.
