Cowboys Pass Up Competition at OSU Cross Country Jamboree

The NMHU men's cross country team won its second team championship of the year by winning the College Division of the Oklahoma State Jamboree on Saturday, Oct. 1st in Stillwater, Okla. The Cowboys had previously won the Texas Tech Open. The Cowboys scored just 54 points to outpace more than 30 teams (25 complete scoring teams) including runner-up Southwestern Kansas (121 points), a nationally ranked NAIA squad, and Colby Community College (169 points), the number-one ranked junior college in the nation.

Highlands was led by Ismael Samano who ran with the lead pack throughout the race. Samano finished third in 25:27 for the hilly 8-kilometer course. A surging Justin Lueras was the 'Pokes number two man on Saturday (25:53/8th), while Nicaise Kazingo (26:05/10th), Alberto Espinosa (26:18/14th) and Troy Madalena (26:30/19th) completed five HU runners in the top 20. There were over 200 runners in the race.

The HU women finished 13th out of  32 scoring teams in the Jamboree. Kristine Kaneichi was the first Cowgirl across the line (19:47/28th) followed by Angella Ibarra (20:12/58th) and West Las Vegas graduate Amanda Ortzow(20:25/75th). There were over 260 finishers in the Jamboree.
