The NMHU Cowboys fell to the #13 University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers 38-14 on 10/22 in Las Vegas, N.M. Turnovers would again be the word of the day as the Cowboys would turn the ball over six times throughout the game. The Cowboys started out very rocky as the Lopers would score on their first three possessions and sprinkle in a defensive interception return for a touchdown to take an early 28-0 lead after the first quarter of play. The Cowboys answered back in the second quarter as they scored twice. The first Cowboy touchdown would come from a 12 yard pass from
Nick Ponce to DeAndre Green for a score. Ponce would connect with
Kevon Williams for the Cowboys last score of the day on a 28 yard pass. The Cowboys held the Lopers to one score to make it 35-14 at the half. The second half would belong to the Cowboy defense as they held the #1 offense in the nation to just three points and 74 yards. Despite the Cowboys valiant efforts in the second half, the Lopers would finish the day with a 38-14 win. With the loss, the Cowboys are now 4-4 overall and 2-4 in RMAC play.
Offensively, the Cowboys finished the day with 427 yards (169 rushing and 258 passing).
Jequerie Proctor led the Cowboys rushing attack as he finished with 108 yards on 17 carries for the day.
Nick Ponce would finish the day completing 20 of 46 pass attempts for 186 yards and two touchdowns. Ponce would also throw three interceptions on the day.
Kevon Williams led the team in receiving numbers with four catches for 62 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively, the Cowboys would have another hard fought game. The Cowboy “D” as a whole held the Lopers to their lowest offensive output of the season as they allowed only 319 yards of total offense as compared to UNK's nation leading average of 568 yards per game. UNK would struggle with the Cowboys secondary as they finished with only 66 yards passing for the day. The Lopers would add in 253 yards rushing to come to their 319 total for the game.
Devin Howard,
Tony Udley and
Clint Barnard would be the top defensive performers for the Cowboys. Howard finished with 13 tackles, and one tackle for loss. Udley finished with 10 tackles and Barnard would round out the top three with nine tackles on the day.
The Cowboys will remain at home this week as they prepare for the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo. The Cowboys will host the Thunderwolves on 10/29 at 6:00 p.m. in Las Vegas, N.M.
