Cowgirls Ground Falcons

#7 Julissa Rodriguez
The NMHU Cowgirls Soccer team dominated the Falcons of the University of Texas-Permian Basin, on 10/4, in Las Vegas, N.M., earning the home victory with a score of 9-1.  The game saw the Cowgirls take 30 shots on target in an attacking onslaught.  The Cowgirls found their first goal midway through the first half, taking 17 shots in the period and only allowing one shot to the Falcons, going into halftime with a 1-0 lead.  Things lit up in the second half of play for the Cowgirls as they scored four unanswered goals in the first 12 minutes of the half.  A mistake in the penalty box by the Cowgirls allowed the Falcons to find a goal and the score was 5-1 with only 27 minutes left in the game.  The Cowgirls continued to assault the Falcons' goal and in the last 10 minutes they found the back of the net four more times to triumph by the final score of 9-1.  With the non-conference victory, the Cowgirls improve to 4-6-0 in overall play while remaining at 2-4-0 in the RMAC.

The Cowgirls started the game in control and on the assault, taking 12 shots to one in the first 26 minutes of play.  Cowgirls' striker Julissa Rodriguez found the first goal for the team in the 27th minute.  Cowgirls' midfielder Kahyra Ramirez intercepted a Falcons' pass and passed to striker Marci Johnson inside the attacking third for the Cowgirls.  Johnson played the one-two pass to Rodriguez and she dribbled the ball into the penalty box.  Rodriguez took the keeper head on and then placed a flick on the ball with her right foot, lobbing it into the right corner of the goal.  The Cowgirls maintained the 1-0 lead throughout the first half but had trouble putting the ball on target.

The Cowgirls had no such trouble finding the target in the second half of play.  The Cowgirls' attack pressed the Falcons' defense immediately in the second period.  In the 46th minute Julissa Rodriguez found her second goal of the game.  Cowgirls' striker Janelle McGee intercepted a Falcons' pass and passed to Rodriguez on the left side of the penalty box. Rodriguez set herself and curled a beautiful shot with her right foot across the goal and into the top right corner of the net, making the score 2-0 with only 58 seconds gone by in the half.  Two minutes later, in the 48th minute, Rodriguez struck again when she intercepted the ball in the attacking third and knocked the ball past the Falcons' backline.  She speed past the Falcons' defenders and attacked the keeper head on flicking her third goal of the game into the right side of the net with her right foot, earning the hat-trick and giving the Cowgirls the 3-0 lead.

The attacking onslaught continued for the Cowgirls as striker Janelle McGee was next to find a goal.  In the 54th minute Julissa Rodriguez passed the ball into the feet of a running McGee, she dribbled the ball into the penalty area from the right side and beat the keeper with a flip of the ball off her right foot into the back of the net.  The Cowgirls now looked confident with the 4-0 lead.  Four minutes later, in the 58th minute, it was striker Janelle McGee that scored again.  Cowgirls' midfielder Britny Cottrell intercepted the ball, dribbled down the left wing and found McGee with a through ball on the run that beat the offside trap.  McGee poached the Falcons' defense with some fancy footwork and dribbled down into the penalty box.  She launched the ball across the six yard box with her right foot into the left corner of the goal.  McGee's brace gave her five goals for the season, and gave the Cowgirls the 5-0 lead in the second half.  In the 63rd minute, the Falcons' got a goal back.  The Cowgirls defense mishandled a long ball into the penalty box as the Cowgirls' keeper and a defender collided going for the ball.  The ball rebounded to Falcons' striker Hannah Dozier who had the open net at her mercy.  Dozier wasted no time and slammed home the goal to make the score 5-1.

The Cowgirls' attack was relentless and they pelted the Falcons' goal with shots.  The Cowgirls' senior goalkeeper Shannon Delarosbil was brought in to play a forward position in the 79th minute and she had an immediate impact.  In the 84th minute Delarosbil found midfielder Autumn Woods with a strong pass in the penalty box and Woods drove the ball into the back of the net.  The goal was Woods third of the season and extended the Cowgirls' lead to 6-1.  Striker Julissa Rodriguez found her fourth goal of the game in the 85th minute as Autumn Woods played a through ball down the left wing into the stride of Rodriguez.  She dribbled the ball down the middle of the pitch and had the keeper on her back foot as she blasted a ball into the back of the net.  The goal was Rodriguez's ninth goal of the season and the lead was 7-1.  Cowgirl Shannon Delarosbil showed up with an assist again in the 88th minute as she took a long throw in the attacking third and used it wisely to find defender Jensen Keith poaching the Falcons' back line.  Keith turned and dribbled into the penalty box and blasted a fierce shot just under the cross bar to score her first goal of the season.  With the score at 8-1, it was Shannon Delarosbil's turn to score.  In the 89th minute Cowgirls' striker Marci Johnson lined up for a corner kick from the right corner.  Johnson blasted a curling cross into the box and the ball deflected off numerous players finally landing at the feet of Delarosbil.  She flung at the ball with her right foot from inside the six yard box but the keeper deflected the ball.  Delarosbil was on the ground and used her left foot to kick the rebound into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.  When the final whistle was blown a minute later, the Cowgirls had punished the Falcons' 9-1.

The Cowgirls defense, led by defender Taylor Gonzales, gave no space to the Falcons' allowing only four shots in the game.  Gonzales' commanding play effectively shut down the right wing for the entire game as she won multiple headers and controlled the Cowgirls' back line.  Striker Julissa Rodriguez led the Cowgirls' attack in the game with 17 shots and 13 shots on goal.  Rodriguez, the RMAC Pre-season Player of the Year, had an assist and her four goals in the game put her in first place among goal scorers in the conference.  Striker Janelle McGee finished the game with two goals and an assist, and goalkeeper turned forward, Shannon Delarosbil had two assists and a goal.  The Cowgirls took an amazing 47 shots in the game, placing 30 of them on target, and ended the game with an impressive nine goals scored for their efforts.  Cowgirls' goalkeeper Scottie Prince (2-0-0) earned her second win in as many tries.

The Cowgirls will be in action again on Friday, 10/7, as they host conference opponent Colorado Christian University at Perkins Stadium in Las Vegas, NM.  The Cougars come into the match in last place in the RMAC with a 1-6-0 conference record and 2-9-0 in overall play.  If you can't make it to the stadium for the 7 pm start time, you can click HERE to watch the game live on the America One Network.
