Despite having four players score in double figures, the NMHU Cowboys fell to in-state foe the Mustangs of Western New Mexico University by a final score of 93-75 in Silver City, N.M. on 1/21. Both teams would play close throughout the first half as the in-state rivals battled every possession. The Mustangs would pull away in the final minutes of the first half as they went on an 8-2 run to go into the half with a 47-36 lead. The Mustangs would carry over that momentum into the second half of play as they would never give up the lead. The Mustangs would lead by as much as 21 points en route to their eighth win of the season. With the loss, the Cowboys fall to 8-9 on the season and 6-7 in RMAC play.
As a team, the Pokes finished the night shooting 43% from the field. The Cowboys struggled from the three point line shooting 24% for the night. Defensively, the Cowboys blocked three shots, stole the ball four times and forced eight WNMU turnovers.
Momcilo Latinovic led the Cowboys for the night in scoring with 15 points. Latinovic finished 4-7 from the field and 2-3 from beyond the arc. Latinovic added in three rebounds and one steal to his nights totals.
Aaryon Williams finished the night with 14 points for the Pokes. Williams finished a perfect 6-6 from the charity strip as well as finished 4-9 from the field. Williams would also have five rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot for the game.
Lionel Coleman rounds out the top three for the Cowboys with 10 points, five rebounds, one assist, two blocked shots and one steal for the night.
The Cowboys will return to their home court to face their next opponent as the Pokes host the Thunderwolves (9-8; 6-7 RMAC) of CSU-Pueblo on 1/27 at 8:00 p.m. The Cowboys and the Thunderwolves are currently tied in seventh place in the RMAC standings vying for a coveted spot in the RMAC Shootout.
