Box Score Gunnison, Colo. - The NMHU Men's Basketball team was upended 84-73 by the Mountaineers of Western State Colorado University, on 12/7.  With the loss the Cowboys, led by Head Coach Joe Harge, now have a 1-2 record in the RMAC and are 3-3 in overall play.

The teams were evenly matched at the beginning of the first half.  The Cowboys took the first decisive lead 28-22, with 8:17 remaining, but the Mountaineers went on a 5-0 run to cut that lead down to one point.

WSCU kept the Cowboys within reach and managed to go ahead by six points with only 28 seconds left in the half.  The Mountaineers would enter the locker-room with a five point advantage, up 45-40.

The Cowboys scored first to start the second half, but the Mountaineers quickly gained control and were up by eight points, 53-45, with 16:29 remaining.  The Cowboys managed to cut the WSCU lead to three points, with 13:45 left in the game, but they would get no closer.

The Mountaineers proceeded to extend their lead to as much as 13 points, although the Cowboys did cut the lead to single digits in the last two minutes.  When the final buzzer sounded, WSCU was victorious on their home court, 84-73.

Head Coach Joe Harge has not been pleased with the Cowboys' effort in the last few games.  “Until we buy into the team concept, learn to trust each other and play with some toughness, we will continue to get beat,” he said. “Right now we are a soft team.”

Dominick Baca led the Cowboys in scoring with 16 points against the Mountaineers.  Baca shot 4-7 from behind the three-point line, made both of his free-throw attempts, and grabbed four rebounds in his team-leading 36 minutes on the court.

Roland Fitch dominated the boards, leading all players with 14 rebounds.  Fitch also scored nine points in 22 minutes of play.

Stargell Love and Ray Riley rounded out the Cowboys' top performers, scoring 13 points each.  Love dished out four assists and grabbed three steals, while Riley also contributed with two assists and a steal.

The Cowboys will continue conference action again on 12/8 when the head to Grand Junction, Colo. to take on the rival Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University.  The Mavericks lead the RMAC with a 3-0 conference record and are 6-1 in overall play.  If you can't make the trip to Grand Junction to watch the Cowboys in action, you can click HERE to follow the game via streaming live stats.  You can also click HERE to watch all the action live on the America One Network.
