HU Track & Field Sprints Into Record Books

The HU Women's Track & Field squad set two new Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference records and amassed the highest point total in program history to finish third at the 2012 RMAC Championships held May 6-8 in Gunnison, Colo.

HU All-American and defending national long jump champion, Jillisa Grant, took down the longest standing record in conference history with a 6.24M (20' 4 ½”) leap to erase the record set by Adams State's Lori Risenhoover in 1982. Grant also won the 100 meter (11.90) and 200 meter (23.75) sprints to go three for three in her individual events.

Kearah Danville came up with a lifetime best in the Triple Jump to set the second new RMAC record for the Cowgirl program. Danville became just the second NCAA DII jumper over 13 meters this year with a mark of 13.16M (43'2”) to win her first RMAC outdoor meet.

Overall, the HU tracksters scored 128.5 points to trail only #1 nationally ranked Adams State (180.2 points) and #7 Western State (137.2) in the conference standings. “We scored more points than ever,” noted HU Head Coach Bob DeVries. “This meet shows how competitive we have become across the board. We won six events – more than any other team.”

Carissa Alexander defended her RMAC title from the 2011 in the Javelin. After trailing through the preliminary rounds, Alexander hit her 39.36 meter winner in the opening round of the final. Also bringin home RMAC gold was the 4x400 Relax of Fiona James, Sessyon Crawford, Jareece Maxwell and LaShondra Ray. The foursome ran 3:49.8 to just miss breaking the conference record set by the Cowgirls in 2011.

The HU squad will now prepare for the Nationals on May 25-26 in Pueblo, Colo. Nine Cowgirls have qualified for the national meet including both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
