Box Score The NMHU Cowgirl Soccer team opened the 2012 season with a 2-0 loss to the Hilltoppers of St. Edward's University, on 8/30, at Perkins Stadium in Las Vegas, N.M. in their home opener.  The inexperienced Cowgirls kept pace with the Hilltoppers through much of the first half, but SEU was able to score before halftime and take a 1-0 lead into the break.  In the second half, the Hilltoppers came out in attack mode and found their second goal of the game one minute into the half to take a 2-0 lead.  The Cowgirls were able to apply more pressure to the Hilltoppers goal in the second half but were unable to find the net.  When the final buzzer sounded the Hilltoppers took the 2-0 victory.  With the non-conference loss at home, the Cowgirls start the 2012 season with a 0-1 overall record.

Although the Cowgirls went on the offensive early in the first half of play it was St. Edward's that was providing productive attacks into the Cowgirls' third of the field.  The Hilltoppers out-shot the Cowgirls in the first half seven shots to three.  In the 43rd minute the Hilltoppers broke the scoreless tie when Jessica Traves scored a goal from inside the box.  Amanda Tabone played a through ball to Amber Black and Black passed the ball into the feet of Traves who wasted no time in slamming a kick into the back of the net.

The Hilltoppers scored again early in the second half.  In the 47th minute St. Edward's was on the attack in the Cowgirls' third and a Hilltoppers' midfielder lobbed a cross from the right wing into the box.  A Cowgirl was first to head the ball, but it stayed in the 18 yard box and in the ensuing scramble St. Edward's' Taylor Wiseman found a rebound with her right foot.  Wiseman pounded the ball into the net from six yards to give the Hilltoppers the 2-0 lead.  Cowgirl defender Lisa Clausen made several good efforts at the goal from long range spot kicks but the Hilltoppers' keeper was able to save all of them.  In the end, the Cowgirls were never able to really pose a threat to the St. Edward's goal from close and could not find the net. At the end of 90 minutes the Hilltoppers emerged with the 2-0 victory.

The Cowgirls will be in action again on Saturday, 9/1, as travel to San Angelo, Texas to face the Rambelles for Angelo State University.  The Rambelles of the Lone Star Conference are 1-0 in the young season after defeating the University of Texas – Permian Basin 2-0, on 8/30.  The game is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.  If you can't make the trip to San Angelo to watch the Cowgirls in action you can click HERE to follow the Live Stats.
