Cowboys Fall to FCS Opponent Southern Utah 45-23

Box Score The NMHU Cowboys fell to NCAA DI opponent Southern Utah University 45-23 in Cedar City, Utah on 9/15. Despite a hard fought performance by the Pokes on both sides of the ball the Thunderbirds of SUU wore down the Cowboys late in the game and outscore the Cowboys 24-3 in the second half of play en route to the win. The Pokes return to Las Vegas, N.M. for RMAC play on 9/22 to take on the Colorado School of Mines at 1:00 in Perkins Stadium.

Offensively the Cowboys finished the night with 346 yards. Darius Davis led the Cowboys in receiving with nine catches for 173 yards and one score. Kevon Williams added in two catches for 90 yards with a long of 52 for the Cowboy receiving core. Taylor Genuser completed 4-7 passes for 55 yards before exiting the game. Emmanuel Lewis came in for Genuser and completed 19 of 32 passes for 311 yards and one score.

Defensively the Pokes held the Thunderbirds to 365 yards for the night. Abdul Kanneh led the way for the Cowboys with seven tackles, one tackle for loss, three pass break-ups and two interceptions which he returned for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Kanneh had a long return of 90 yards for a score. Jared Koster finished the night with 10 tackles with one for a loss of three yards. DiAmaal Holmes rounds out the top three Pokes with eight tackles on the night.

“Our guys played tough tonight. We showed some great things against a very good FCS opponent. I'm very proud of the way our guys played and now it's time to get ready for Colorado School of Mines,” commented NMHU Head Coach Eric Young following his Cowboys 45-23 loss to Southern Utah on 9/15.

The Pokes return to Las Vegas, N.M. for RMAC play on 9/22 to take on the Colorado School of Mines at 1:00 in Perkins Stadium.
