Cowgirls Lose to #12 Fort Lewis, 1-0

Box Score Las Vegas, N.M. - The NMHU Women's Soccer team endured their fourth defeat in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference against the no.12 ranked Skyhawks of  Fort Lewis College, by the final score of 1-0. The Skyhawks and the Cowgirls were in an intense battle all throughout the game. The Skyhawks had a slight edge in the shots by period. They outshot the Cowgirls 6-3 in the first period. The Skyhawks had another slight edge in corner kicks, 3-2. Both teams almost had equal time of ball possesion in the first period.  At the end of the first period it was tied 0-0. The Cowgirls were determined to break the tie in the second period.  In the 60th minute of the second period, the Skyhawks broke the tie with a goal (1-0). The Skyhawks would have an advantage in ball possession, shots by period and corner kicks in the second period. The Cowgirls couldn't capitalize on their several shots on goal.  The Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Justin Wagar, drop to 3-4-1 in the RMAC with a 5-4-3 record in overall play.

In the first period, both teams were playing with equal intensity. Both the Skyhawks and the Cowgirls were going back and forth in ball possesion. Both teams defeneses were  playing very well and their intensity was being shown with their enthusiasm.  Both of the goalkeepers were feeding off each of their own teams' energy by saving the opponent's shots on goal.

Fort Lewis College continued their passion and intensity in the second period. The Skyhawks had an advantage in the shots by period (9-5) and in corner kicks (3-0). They controlled the pace and the ball possession in the second period. They would score the only goal of the game in the 60th minute from a Jordan Hix through-ball and Emma Cannis shot her goal by finishing in the net, giving the Skyhawks the lead (1-0).  After the goal, the Cowgrils couldn't find the net with their five shots on goal. When the final whistle was blown,  the Skyhawks were victorious in the match 1-0.

Goalkeeper Nikita Rivera played a very good game.  She ended the game with seven saves.

The Cowgirl Soccer Team will contiune conference play on the road, on Oct.18, at Colorado State University - Pueblo at 7:00 p.m. The Thunderwolves are currently in eight place in the conference, with a 2-5 RMAC record and 5-5 in overall play.
