Cowboys Outplay Mountaineers, 91-83

Box Score Las Vegas, N.M. –The NMHU Men's Basketball team played against the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers on Feb. 16.  In a thrilling game, the Cowboys walked off the court winners. The final score was 91-83.  Under Head Coach Joe Harge, the Cowboys are 10-9 in conference play and 12-11 in overall play. Coming off a win against Western State Colorado University, the Cowboys remain in RMAC postseason contention.

At the beginning of the first half the Cowboys jumped out to an early lead. Lavell McDade started his scoring with two 3-pointers, assisting NMHU with a 12-3 lead at the 17:15 mark. The Cowboys continued to score and gained a 10 point lead (15-5), with 15:38 to play in the first half.

The Mountaineers attempted to climb back into the game before it was too late, but they were impeded by the Cowboys' scoring. The Cowboys were able to sustain the lead by shooting the ball well. Although they shot only 38 percent from the field, the Cowboys shot 44 percent (12-27) from three point range.

The first half ended with a score of 46-36, favoring the Cowboys.

In the second half, the Cowboys continued to keep the lead. By the 18:35 mark of the second half, the Cowboys were able to extend their lead to 52-41 with a big 3-pointer from Mannie Cass.

Mannie Cass played a great game for the Cowboys, earning a double-double. The junior from Carbondale Ill. scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Later in the second half, the Mountaineers broke the lead down to six points (52-46). They were going to close the deficit but the Cowboys consistently kept the margin at 10 points. At the end of the game, the Cowboys won by eight points with a final score of 91-83.

The victory over WSCU keeps the Cowboys hopes high for advancing into the RMAC postseason. NMHU currently is tied for sixth place, with a 10-9 conference record and a 12-11 overall record.

The Cowboys continue conference play, on Feb.22, against Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo. The Orediggers are currently tied in sixth place with the Cowboys in the RMAC, with a conference record of 10-9.
