Las Vegas, N.M. – The Cowgirl Volleyball team finished the 2013 I.C. Bhakta Invitational Tournament with a 3-1 record. The Cowgirls hosted eight opposing NCAA DII teams at the John A. Wilson Complex over the weekend (Sept. 13-14) for a successful two days of volleyball action. The Cowgirls, led by Head Coach
Bryan Crawford, are now 6-2 in the 2013 season as they approach the beginning of conference play.
Dixie State College 3 – NMHU 2
The Cowgirls began the weekend with the first match on Friday against Dixie State College (Utah). The Red Storm earned quick victories in the first two sets (25-19, 25-17). The Cowgirls rebounded with wins in sets three and four (25-15, 25-23). Dixie St. would end up taking the first match with a 15-7 win in the deciding fifth set.
NMHU 3 – WSCU 0The Cowgirls came back in their second match of the day to sweep the Mountaineers of Western State Colorado University in three straight sets. They battled for a 25-21 victory in the first set and then cruised in sets two and three, winning 25-16 and 25-18.
The Cowgirls finished the day on Friday (Sept. 13) with a 1-1 record on their home court.
NMHU 3 – SEU 0
On Saturday, Sept. 14, the Cowgirls took three sets to finish off the St. Edward's University Hilltoppers in their first match of the day. The Cowgirls got off to a hot start, easily taking the first set 25-17. The teams battled in the next two sets, going 25-22 in set two and using extra points (27-25) to sweep the Hilltoppers in the third set.
NMHU 3 – ENMU 2
The Cowgirls battled in-state rival Eastern New Mexico University in the final match of the 2013 I.C. Bhakta Invitational Tournament. The home crowd was filled with excitement for the finale to the weekend's volleyball bonanza and they would not be disappointed. The teams went back-and-forth in the first set, before the Zias eventually grabbed a 25-22 victory. The Cowgirls used the early set back to motivate themselves to a 25-16 win in second set. ENMU was not about to step aside for the Cowgirls and the teams went point-for-point in the third set, before the Cowgirls earned a hard-fought 25-22 victory. The fans were expecting the Cowgirls to finish the rival Zias off in the fourth set, but ENMU had their own plans and they dominated in a 25-15 victory to send the match into the deciding fifth set. Both teams pulled out all the stops in the fifth set and they went head to head in an exciting finish to the tournament. With the game tied up at 12 points apiece, the Cowgirls rattled off three straight points to win the final match of the weekend 15-12.
The Cowgirls recovered after their early loss to Dixie State, battling for three straight wins and finishing their second straight tournament with a 3-1 record.

The Cowgirls will begin conference action next Friday, Sept. 20, as they host Colorado Mesa University. The Mavericks were one of the better teams at the 2013 I.C. Bhakta Invitational Tournament, stringing together impressive performances in four straight wins. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m at the John A. Wilson Complex.
The Cowgirls will then host Ft. Lewis College, on Sept. 21, after the Cowboys' football game. The Skyhawks will take to the court at the John A. Wilson Complex at 7:00 p.m.
