Cowgirls Fall to Roadrunners, 4-1

#21 Nicole "Jedi" Millar
Box Score Las Vegas, N.M. – The NMHU Cowgirl Soccer team suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat at the hands of Metropolitan State University of Denver, on Sept. 29, at Perkins Stadium.  The Roadrunners scored their first goal of the game in the fifth minute and went on to score three more first half goals, taking a 4-0 lead at halftime.  The Cowgirls managed to grab a goal in the 69th minute, but it would not be enough to erase the Roadrunners' advantage.  The Cowgirls, led by Head Coach Justin Wagar, fall to 4-2-2 in overall play and 2-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Metro State took control of the game early on in the first half.   The Roadrunners had a staunch defense and were in good possession of the ball, passing well around the pitch.  In the fifth minute, Karisa Price poached her first goal of the season on a cross from Carly Nelson.  Price found the end of the cross inside the six-yard box and buried the shot with the inside of her foot, giving the Roadrunners the initial 1-0 lead.

The Roadrunners had the momentum in the game and they were forcing the action in the Cowgirls' half of the field.  In the 28th minute, Abby Rolph launched a shot at goal which rebounded off a Cowgirl defender.  Jordan Post found the ball at her feet inside the six-yard box and flicked the shot into the net for a 2-0 Metro State lead.

Just over one minute later, the Cowgirls fouled a Metro State attacker in the penalty box and the referee immediately pointed to the spot.  The Roadrunners' Becca Medina stepped up to take the penalty kick and thundered a shot into the back of the net, giving Metro State a 3-0 lead in the 29th minute.

Metro State completed their first half scoring bonanza in the 39th minute.  Jordan Post played a cross from the right side of the penalty box.  Nicole Pollack deftly heeled the ball on through the six-yard box from right to left and Alexie Marr finished from point blank range.  The Roadrunners would take a 4-0 lead into the halftime break.

The Cowgirls finally found a goal of their own in the 69th minute.  After a Metro State foul, Cowgirl Julie Essick lined up to take the free kick from 35 yards out, right of centerline.  Essick charged the ball and bent a beautiful shot into the lower left side of the net.  Essick's first goal of the season cut the Metro State lead down to 4-1.

Unfortunately for the Cowgirls, Metro State had a comfortable three goal lead.  The Cowgirls were doing a better job of organizing attacks in the second half, but the Roadrunners were able to prevent any significant scoring threat with solid defense and great passing.  When the final whistle blew to end the game, the Roadrunners had come away with a road victory by the final score of 4-1.

The Cowgirls will continue conference action on the road in Golden, Colo., on Oct. 4, against the 13th ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers.  Mines is currently sitting in second place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, with a perfect 3-0 conference record and 6-0-1 in overall play.  If you can't make the trip up to Golden to catch your Cowgirls in action, you can click HERE to follow the game on Live Stats or you can watch the game live via the internet video stream on the America One Network.

The Cowgirls will return home to Perkins Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 6, hosting the Mountaineers of Western State Colorado University.
