Soccer Looks to get on Right Side of RMAC Tournament this Weekend

Head coach Justin Wagar
OCT. 10 at ADAMS STATE: LIVE STATS
OCT. 12 at FORT LEWIS: LIVE STATS | LIVE VIDEO

ALAMOSA and DURANGO, Colo. –
The New Mexico Highlands soccer team (5-3-2, 2-2-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) looks to move on the right side of the RMAC Tournament standings this weekend with huge games this weekend at rival Adams State (1-6-2, 0-4-2 RMAC) Friday (Oct. 10) and at Fort Lewis (3-3-4, 2-2-3) Sunday (Oct. 12).

As both of the Cowgirls' opponents have combined for six ties on the season, it could be another long weekend. Highlands played a pair of overtime games last weekend, battling to a scoreless tie with Colorado School of Mines before defeating Western State, 1-0, in overtime.

Not ANOTHER Shutout

The Cowgirls soccer team has done a great job of handing out goose eggs this season. With a pair of shutouts last week, the Cowgirls have now blanked 7-of-10 opponents this season. The seven shutouts tie a school season record, and the Cowgirls still have at least eight games to go this season. Highlands leads the conference and is 10th in the nation with a shutout in 70 percent of its games.

Defense Wins

For the Cowgirls exceptional defense, freshman goalkeeper Sarah Beecher was named RMAC Goalkeeper of the Week while junior defender Molly Enenbach was named RMAC Defender of the Week.

Junior defender Allison Jordan (Spokane, Wash.) was named "Best of the Inland Northwest" among defenders.

Scouting Adams State

It will be a critical three points Highlands will be seeking when it plays at Adams State on Friday (Oct. 10) at 4 p.m. The Grizzlies only have one win all season and none in conference play.

Alex Sanderson leads the team with three goals on the year while Molly O'Connor is 1-6-2 in goal with a pair of shutouts and 44 saves for the year.

The lone win for the Grizzlies came on Sept. 7, 3-0, over Texas-Permian Basin, two days after the Cowgirls won 4-0. However, Adams State has tied Metro State and Fort Lewis on the season, two opponents Highlands has been defeated by, 1-0.

Scouting Fort Lewis

The Cowgirls will be looking to enact a little revenge on Fort Lewis Sunday (Oct. 12) at noon. Highlands lost to the Skyhawks on Sept. 21, 1-0.

If the record-breaking shutout does not occur at Adams State, there is a good chance it might occur at Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks have recorded a shutout in 60 percent of their games while they have battled to a scoreless tie four times on the season.

Fort Lewis has only four goals on the season, with half of those coming off the foot of Courtney Riley. However, Caitlyn Espinoza has only allowed seven scores in goal on the season and has 31 saves. She is 3-3-3 on the season.

Next Up

The Cowgirls will remain at home for an entire weekend for the first time since non-conference play next week when they host CSU-Pueblo and Adams State.
