Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Cowgirls managed to outshoot the Skyhawks 13-6, including 6-4 in shots on goal, but the New Mexico Highlands soccer team (3-2-1, 0-1-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) saw Fort Lewis (2-3-1, 1-1 RMAC) score the lone goal on a mad scramble in the box Sunday afternoon (Sept. 21) at Perkins Stadium in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
Neither team really put together any scoring chances together until the 71st. The Skyhawks served a ball from near midfield into the penalty box. A Fort Lewis player went for the ball, with freshman goalkeeper
Sarah Beecher also charging. The two collided, and after the ball bounced around the box, Riley Courtney put the ball in the open net for the lone score of the game.
Freshman
Malia Maack led the Cowgirls with two shots on goal, followed by one each from senior
Alyssa Saucedo, juniors
Crystal Schuder and
Allison Jordan and sophomore
Anyssa Dagnino. Beecher fell to 3-2-1 in goal for the season, grabbing three saves.
Brooke Milliet led the visitors with a pair of shots on target, but it was Riley who put the ball in the net on her only shot on goal. Caitlyn Espinosa grabbed six saves and is now 2-3 on the year between the posts.
The Cowgirls return to the pitch Friday at 11 a.m. against Colorado Christian in Golden, Colorado.
