Box Score Las Vegas, N.M.- New Mexico Highlands University women's soccer team took on a tought Colorado Christian University for the second time this month, but this game was on the Cowgirls' turf. The Cowgirls won 3-2 in an exciting last 20 minutes against CCU.
Neither team was able to get on the board during the first half, but the Cowgirls managed 13 shots (8 of which were on goal) against CCU's strong defense. The Cowgirls opened the game pressing the Cougars defense and had 3 great chances to take the lead in the first 10 minutes, but couldn't find the back of the net. Cowgirl goalkeeper
Apolonia Thomas had 3 saves in the first half. The Cougars managed 4 shots, 3 of which were on goal, and their keeper Shaya Lawrence had 8 saves the first half.
It was looking as if the second half was going to be a repeat of the first, but with in the 78 minute NMHU's
Mallory Bostic scored a goal off a great face cutting run with a pass from
Salina Lucero. Roughly 30 seconds later CCU's Mollie Monson scored her first goal of the year, on a great header off a great cross by Meghan Troupe. NMHU's
Hilda Romo kept the action rolling scoring the Cowgirls second goal with yet another assist from
Salina Lucero.
Being down 2-1, the Cougars were forced to put more pressure on the Cowgirls, but unfortunately the Cougars fouled the Cowgirls inside their own box. The Cowgirls were given a penalty kick which
Samantha Mendez took. As Mendez took the shot, the goalie went the wrong and the Cowgirls scored to grow their lead to 3-1. Shortly after, CCU's Cora Aversano scored on a penalty kick bringing the Cougars back within one. Unfortunately for the Cougars the game ended in a 3-2 win for the Cowgirls.
