Buffs too much for Cowboys

Box Score CANYON, Texas-  The Cowboys were on the road Saturday at West Texas A&M, as part of the first men's and women's double header. The Cowboys were looking for revenge as they lost to the Buffs just a week earlier 89-75. The Cowboys were not able to get the revenge they were looking for as they fell 105-92.

The Cowboys got out to a fast start by going on a 10-2 run in the first 1:48 of the game that included back two threes for Jonathon Mines.  The Buffs would then go on a 20-7 run that spanned 9:00 and gave them the 22-14 lead. The Cowboys would spend the next minute going on a 6-0 run to make it a 20-22 game going into the under eight media timeout.

With the Buffs up 29-26 with 6:10 left in the first half, the Cowboys would miss their next five shots. The Buffs took advantage of the Cowboys misses by going on a 9-2 run to grow their lead to 12 with 3:32 on the clock.

Kendrick Nichols brought the Buffs lead to eight with an acrobatic fade-away. With 1:10 on the clock Ron Lawton would hit a pair of free throws to cut it lead within six but Gerber of the Buffs wanted to extend their lead when he hit a three from the right wing.  In the last 36 seconds Marlon Johnson hit a three and Jonathon Mines would hit a lay-up to make it a four-point game going into the locker room, 37-41.

The Cowboys wasted no time getting to work in the second half. Just nine seconds into the half Johnson would hit a jumper to cut the lead to two. Just over a minute later the Mines would head to the line to shoot two, where he would hit one to make it a 41-40 game. After a Buffs made free throw, Mines would find himself back at the charity stripe where he would knock down both to once again make it a one point game.

At the under 16 media timeout the Cowboys would trail 52-49, as they would win the first round of the second half 12-11. Coming out of the timeout Kaylen Shane would have a monster dunk to cut the Buffs lead down to one. Unfortunately Shane would gain a technical and Evans would hit both free throws to make it a three-point game, 54-51.

The Buffs would go on a 11-3 run to make it 65-57. Mines would then take a shot from downtown and make it an eight point game but the Buffs' Bonner would come down for a high percentage short range shot to bring it back up to eight.

The Buffs would go on a 17-5 run to grow their lead to 18 in just 3:05 to make it an 86-68 with 8:48 left in the game.

The Cowboys would make it a 11-point game with 6:30 left in the game but unfortunately that was the closest that they could cut the lead. The Buffs would beat the Cowboys for the second time in a week by a final score of 105-92

Thoughts from coach Craig Snow:
"Just have to tip our hat to West Texas. We played them last week and I felt we were exposed inside, on the backboard, and they scored 30 points off turnovers. We made some adjustments coming into this game to combat what ailed us in the first game and today hurt us from the three point line. Guys that haven't been shooting the ball well coming into the game made shots and it really made then difficult to defend. It was our best game in terms of taking care of the ball and that showed by us scoring in the 90s which I think we are capable of, but it  feels like we plug one hole and another begins to leak.  It's early in the season and we have had a very tough stretch against some really good teams.  It's all about being the best we can be in conference play and we are getting exposed to a lot of talented teams that are really good learning experiences for a new team."

The Cowboys return to action on Friday in California as part of a Ayres Thanksgiving Shootout.
