LAS VEGAS, N.M. –The Cowgirls committed nine errors on the day as the New Mexico Highlands softball team (1-3) fell to Notre Dame de Namur 11-4 in the first game before a 10-3 loss to CSU-Dominguez Hill in the nightcap.
In the first game of the day, the Cowgirls took a 3-0 lead after one inning with the Argonauts before surrendering all 11 runs in the final five innings. In the bottom of the first with a pair on base, sophomore
Katelyn Bates singled to load the bases. Junior
Jacquelyn Solis hit an RBI single and sophomore
Alysia Cavone added an RBI double.
Bates added a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth. She led Highlands with two hits in three at-bats with two runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore
Gabby Hansell (0-1) picked up the loss, allowing 10 hits and eight runs (six earned)in 4.2 innings pitched.
Notre Dame de Namur tied the game in the top of the third. Alessandra Giannavola led off the game with a double and scored on Kaydi Kochi's single. Later in the inning with two outs and a pair of runners in scoring position, Lindsay Handy doubled to right center to drive in a pair of runs. A pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth blew the game open. Breanna Young led off the inning by reaching on an error. With bases loaded and one out, Cynthia Ream-Garcia doubled in what proved to be the winning runs.
The Argonauts scored six runs in the final two innings for the win. Jenna Bassler went the distance, allowing six hits and four runs in seven innings of work.
In the nightcap, CSU-Dominguez Hills scored eight runs in the final four innings for the seven-run win. Junior
Nalani Hernandez added an RBI single in the second while Solis added a two-RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth.
Hernandez went 2-for-three with a run scored and an RBI while junior
Isabel Villalobos picked up the loss in her first start of the season.
The Toros never trailed, starting with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Analisa Nicholson began the inning with a walk and Alexandra Mootry hit a double to put a pair in scoring position. Stephanie Hua added a sacrifice fly and Carly Mitchell added an RBI hit.
Mootry and Mitchell both went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Hua went 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
The Cowgirls complete the weekend tomorrow (Feb. 15) against Simon Fraser at 3 p.m.
