Basketball Travels to Mile High City for Final Colorado Road Trip

DENVER, Colo. – The New Mexico Highlands men's and women's basketball teams will take part in their final Friday-Saturday roadtrip of the season when they battle Colorado School of Mines Friday (Feb. 20) beginning at 6 p.m. before taking on Colorado Christian Saturday (Feb. 21).

New Mexico Highlands (6-17, 5-14 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) looks to sweep the weekend against Colorado Christian and Colorado School of Mines, who the Cowgirls both beat in Las Vegas in December, 2014.

The Cowgirls continue to torch the net from deep, ranking 52nd in the nation with seven triples per game and 67th in the nation by hitting 34.3 percent of their shots from downtown. Senior Jenny Johnson is seventh in the nation by hitting 46.5 percent of her shots from downtown.
 
Senior Anngelina Sanchez continues to lead the team with 13.1 points per game while Johnson chips in 12.3 points per game. Sophomore Giulia Siminoni is third in the conference and 35th in the nation with 4.7 assists per game. However, her counterpart from Colorado School of Mines, Laura Tyree, adds 4.8 assists per game.
 
 
Scouting Colorado School of Mines Women
 
Like Highlands, Colorado School of Mines (11-14, 6-13 RMAC) has been eliminated from contention for the RMAC Tournament.
 
It will be raining triples on Friday night as the Orediggers hit 6.4 threes per game (80th in the nation) and hit 35.4 percent (49th in the nation).
 
Colorado School of Mines is led by the two-headed monster of Taylor Helbig's 14.8 points per game while Courtney Martin chips in 14.6 points per game. Laura Tyree is 32nd in the nation with 4.8 assists per game and adds a pair of steals per game.
 
 
Scouting Colorado Christian Women
 
Colorado Christian (12-13, 12-7 RMAC) is currently sitting fourth in the conference, but they are only two games out from not even making the conference tournament. So the Cowgirls could play spoiler against the Cougars.
 
The Cougars are averaging allowing more points (64.3) than scoring (64.2), but the Colorado Christian relies on a stingy defense. The Cougars are 46th in the nation with four blocks per game and are 71st in the nation with 9.3 steals per game.
 
Three players reach double-digit in scoring, led by Kate Louthan with 12.8 points per game. Claire Paxton contributes 12.0 points per game but leads the team with 6.6 rebounds per game.
 
 
Scouting New Mexico Highlands Men
 
New Mexico Highlands (5-18, 5-14 RMAC) looks to play spoiler to the 14th ranked team (National Association of Basketball Coaches and D2SIDA polls) in the nation on Friday night. Highlands lost to both Colorado Christian and Colorado Mines to begin conference play.

The Cowboys will need to hit their threes if they want to pull off the upset. Highlands is 96th in the nation with nearly eight three-pointers per game.
 
If juniors Jonathon Mines and Kendrick Nichols are on, the Cowboys are hard to beat. After Nichols led the team for most of the season in scoring, Mines took over the lead last weekend with 17.8 points per game (80th in the nation). Nichols is 86th in the nation with 17.7 points per game. Mines is 39th in the country with nearly three triples per game while Nichols is 68th with 2.65 three-pointers per game.
 
 
Scouting Colorado School of Mines Men
 
Colorado School of Mines (20-3, 16-3 RMAC) looks to keep pace with Metropolitan State University of Denver for a possible regular season conference championship and can clinch a home game in the first round of the RMAC Tournament with a win.
 
The Orediggers average 77.6 points per game but hang their hat on defense by only giving up 65.2 points per game(30th in the nation). Colorado School of Mines is third in the nation by hitting 52.3 percent of their shots from the field, including 42.1 percent of shots behind the arc (third in the nation).
 
Brian Muller leads the team with 15.4 points per game while Caleb Waitsmen contributes 7.2 rebounds per game.
 
 
Scouting Colorado Christian Men
 
Colorado Christian (12-13, 9-10 RMAC) is two games clear of the final spot in the RMAC Tournament. The three-pointers will be flying as the Cougars add 9.3 triples per game at a 40 percent clip. The Cowboys also cannot put the Cougars on the line as they are second in the nation by hitting 79.1 percent from the line.
 
Michael Brown leads the way with 16.6 points per game while Tyler Shields adds 10.7 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Brown hits 48 percent of his threes.
 
 
Next Up
 
The basketball teams close out the 2014-15 season next Saturday (Feb. 28) when they travel to Silver City, New Mexico, to take on rival Western New Mexico. The women's game is set to begin at 2 p.m.
