GOODWELL, Okla. – The Cowgirls picked up the sweep of the Aggies in softball action Tuesday (March 10), 11-4 in the afternoon and 8-2 in the nightcap.
Tied 4-4 going into the seventh of game one, Highlands exploded for seven runs.
Jacquelyn Solis singled before
Jacquelyn Wood reached on an error.
Ka'uilani Kamai then scored what would be the winning runs with a bases-clearing double.
Gabby Hansell followed with an RBI double before runners were on the corner thanks to an
Ashton Borunda's single. A hit by pitch loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly scored the fourth run of the inning before
Dekota Monarrez slammed a three-run home run to close the scoring.
Jessica Brink picked up her first win of the season (1-6), throwing the complete game and giving up four runs on 10 hits with seven strikeouts. Hansell and Borunda each had three hits, while
Katelyn Bates added a pair of hits and three RBI's.
With the Cowgirls up 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth, The Aggies' Ashley Jarzombek and Salina Galindo both singled to put two on and one out. A flyout put runners on the corner before a two-out single by Heathington scored a run. An infield base hit loaded the bases and Bolton came up with the two out hit. Highlands scored a single tally in the top of the sixth to tie it up.
Samantha Arledge fell to 3-6 in the circle for Oklahoma Panhandle, allowing 11 runs (10 earned) and 15 hits in 6.2 innings pitched. Jazormbek, Anyssa Barbosa and Galindo each had two hits and scored every run for the Aggies.
In game two, the Cowgirls used balance scoring instead of the big inning, going up 8-0 before the final 8-2 win. With one out in the first, Kamai doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Bates's single. Brink added a two-run blast in the third. In the fourth with a runner on second, Hansell hit an RBI double and then scored on an infield single by Bates.
Michelle Brincefield (2-2) picked up the complete game win, giving up eight hits and two runs with five strikeouts in seven innings. Hansell led the offense with three hits in five at-bats with three runs scored and an RBI.
Oklahoma Panhandle extended the game with two runs in the sixth. After a single and double put a pair of runners in scoring position, Madison Heathington cleared the bases with a single.
Richardson took the loss and falls to 3-6, allowing 12 hits and eight runs, two earned.
The Cowgirls wrap up the series with Oklahoma Panhandle State with another doubleheader Wednesday (March 11).
