Box Score 2 GOODWELL, Okla. – It was a repeat of Tuesday as the Cowgirls used solid pitching and balancing scoring to take a pair from the Aggies as New Mexico Highlands (5-13) beat Oklahoma State Panhandle (6-17) 3-2 in the first game before taking the finale 10-2.
"We had a great series and had big hits from several people," head coach
Karin Gadberry said. It was good to come back in the seventh for the win in game one."
With Highlands down 2-0 entering the fifth, it cut the deficit in half and used timely hitting to complete the rally in the seventh. In the fifth with two down and a runner at first,
Gabby Hansell doubled to right center to drive in a run. With two down and a runner on second in the seventh, it was Hansell who again provided the lightning as she singled and advanced to second on the throw home that was late to tie the game.
Katelyn Bates doubled home the go-ahead run.
Jessica Brink retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to improve to 2-6 on the year. In the circle in ther final 4.2 innings, she gave up two runs and only two hits. Hansell had a huge day from the plate with four hits in as many at-bats with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
The Aggies scored a run in each of the second and third innings in the same fashion: the leadoff batter got on, was sacrificed to second and scored on a hit. Madison Heathington provided the RBI double in the seciond while Samantha Arledge singled in the third.
Arledge picked up thye loss in the circle, allowing seven hits and three runs in seven innings pitched with seven strikeouts.
In game two, the Cowgirls held a slim 3-2 lead before exploding for four runs in the fourth.
Alyssa Cavone led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a bunt. Pitcher
Jacquelyn Wood helped her own cause with an infield single to put runners on the corner.
Jacquelyn Solis followed with an RBI single and advanced to second on an error that allowed Wood to score. Hansell doubled to put two in scoring position before a passed ball scored the third run. Bates singled in the fourth run of the inning.
The Cowgirls scored in five-of-seven innings.
Solis was the one who went 4-for-4 in the first game with four RBI's and two runs scored. Wood improved to 1-2 in the circle, allowing two runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.
A potential big bottom of the first was quickly diffused. A double and two singles scored the first Oklahoma Panhandle run and a sacrifice bunt moved a pair into scoring position. However, Wood got a fielder's choice and a big strikeout to eend the threat.
Taylor Richardson picked up the loss for the Aggies to fall to 3-7, allowing 13 hits and nine runs in 5.1 innings pitched.
The Cowgirls return to action Saturday (March 14) at Colorado Mesa.
